Cleaning a Shower

Read our tips on how to clean a shower

Cleaning a shower regularly helps maintain its appearance and prevents the buildup of mold, soap scum and grime.

For this reason here is a step-by-step guide

Steps to Clean a Shower:

1. Preparation:

Gather all your cleaning supplies and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated. Open a window or turn on the exhaust fan for better airflow.

If you’re using any harsh chemicals, it’s a good idea to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.

2. Rinse the Shower:

Start by rinsing the entire shower area with warm water. This helps to loosen any soap scum or debris, making it easier to clean.

Supplies Needed:

– All-purpose cleaner or a specialised shower cleaner

– Baking soda (optional)

– White vinegar (optional)

– Scrub brush or sponge (non-abrasive)

– Microfiber cloths or paper towels

– Squeegee (optional)

– Rubber gloves (optional)

– Old toothbrush (for grout and hard-to-reach areas)

3. Apply Cleaner:

Spray your all-purpose cleaner or specialised shower cleaner on all surfaces, including the walls, floor, and fixtures. If you prefer a natural solution, you can create a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.

Allow the cleaner to sit for about 5-10 minutes for example to penetrate tough stains and soap scum.

4. Scrub the Surfaces:

Using a scrub brush or a non-abrasive sponge, start scrubbing the walls and floor of the shower. For instance for areas with heavy buildup, like corners or grout lines, an old toothbrush can be effective.

Focus on areas that typically accumulate soap scum and mildew, such as the showerhead, faucet, and any shelves.

5. Tackle Mold and Mildew:

If you notice any mold or mildew, obviously you can use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste. Apply this paste to the affected areas, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, and then scrub with a brush before rinsing.

6. Rinse Thoroughly:

After scrubbing, rinse all surfaces thoroughly with warm water to remove all cleaning products and debris. Make sure no residue is left behind.

7. Dry the Shower:

Use a squeegee to remove excess water from the shower walls and glass doors. This helps prevent water spots and mildew growth.

Wipe down fixtures and surfaces with a microfiber cloth or paper towel to give them a polished look and obviously prevent hard water stains.

8. Regular Maintenance:

To keep your shower cleaner for longer, consider incorporating a regular maintenance routine. As I have noted wipe down the walls and fixtures after each use to reduce soap scum buildup, and perform a deeper clean weekly or bi-weekly.

By following these steps, on cleaning a shower you can keep your shower clean, fresh, and inviting, making it a pleasant space for relaxation and personal care.
